HIPAA
is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996, which require the Department
of Health and Human Services to establish national standards
for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers
for providers, health plans, and employers. It also addresses
the security and privacy of health data.
The Administrative Simplification provisions of HIPAA include:
Electronic Transactions and Code Sets, Security, Unique
Identifiers and Privacy.
All healthcare organizations must be in compliance with
the
HIPAA regulations. This includes all health care providers,
even one-physician offices, health plans, employers, public
health authorities, life insurers, clearinghouses, billing
